I love the weather in October. It’s cool; it’s crisp; and, it provides the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the best comfort foods and friendship Scranton has to offer. And, based on the enormous turn out of people who attended our annual roast beef dinner on Sunday, Oct. 25, I’m obviously not the only person who thinks this way.
Now in its fifth year, Cathy Gavin, owner of Stirna’s Restaurant, once again generously catered this dinner for us and 800 of our closest friends. Needless to say, though I will say it anyway, the meal was outstanding. The beef was juicy, the potatoes were perfectly mashed, the carrots were tender, and the gravy’s consistency had just the right amount of thickness to it. The people really enjoyed it, and we are so grateful to Cathy for preparing it each and every year.
After patrons finished their meal, many of them supported this fundraiser by purchasing baked goods at our First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association sponsored bake sale as well as chances to win a beautiful variety of theme baskets, an assortment of gift certificates to area restaurants and businesses, and cash. In total, we had over 60 prizes up for grabs which certainly made an the equal number of lucky winners happy.
With the help of everyone who attended the dinner by purchasing tickets and the many generous businesses and friends of Holy Family Residence who provided sponsorships and raffle prizes for the event, we raised over $21,000 to be used toward purchasing new and energy-efficient windows for our home. That is such a blessing to us, and we are so very grateful to everyone who supported this event. We are especially grateful to the many parishes of our diocese and Lamar Advertising for helping us promote the dinner as well as to the dedicated committee members and volunteers who continuously help us with fundraisers such as this and in so many other ways throughout the year. As the Little Sisters always say, they could not do what they do without all of you!
